Monkey D. Luffy is a character created by Eichiro Oda in the globally acclaimed Anime series One Piece who found a way to make people who align with his overall vision follow him fearlessly, and built a strong community of thousands of followers globally. He embodies the strength & pride of who a true leader can be.

Here are six (6) leadership lessons we can all learn from Luffy

  1. HE IS AMBITIOUS WITH A VERY STRONG APPETITE FOR HEALTHY COMPETITIONS

Luffy still remains the most ambitious 17-year-old character created by Eichiro Oda. He is as fearless as the sun shines during the day & as the stars shine at night. His fearlessness funny enough is not based on how strong he is or how smart (cause Luffy can be so stupid when he wants to be LOL). But, it is contagious. Luffy can make you question your own ambition as a person, then stretches that ambition because he opens your mind to how possible anything is, doesn’t believe in failures but sees them as opportunities instead (this can get very annoying if your mind is not like his).

His ambition can make you laugh at him at first sight but you cannot ignore him. Who in their right mind boldly says he wants to be The King Of The Pirates in an era where pirates were chased & captured tirelessly by the Navy, Luffy does that. That type of ambitious leader knows how to capture the hearts of strangers into becoming followers. He also built himself into being a person that loves to have people he has healthy competition with because according to him, it makes him grow stronger, better and more in focus.

2. HE NEVER MICROMANAGES HIS SUBORDINATES

One thing Monkey D. Luffy hates is being given too many instructions from anyone. He developed an independent mind from a very young age, maybe due to his childhood experience. This mindset shaped Luffy into becoming one of the most loved Anime characters. Luffy trusts with absolute certainty. He believes that his goals with that of his team are so aligned that he never wavers on his trust for their capabilities. If Luffy is between hell or high water and any of his teammates offers to sort out the challenge he can bet his reputation on the fact that they will do as they have said.

This singular act of his made his comrades so dependable that they are willing to die in his stead. He makes them feel so valuable ad trusted they try not to create disappointments while chasing their own goals aligned to his. We all can learn a thing or two from this can’t we?

3. LUFFY IS A STRATEGIC RECRUITER

Monkey D. Luffy has a thing or two to teach recruiters, hahahahahaha… On a more serious note, Luffy has a way of selecting the people he asks to join his team. First, you have to be a person with a kind heart. He has a sweet spot for kindness. He also likes people who have dreams, goals they want to achieve, ambition. He can be very persistent when he finds a teammate he really wants to join his crew. A little part of him aligns himself with misfits, people who society would naturally laugh at. He never underestimates people, he believes everyone has something to offer, that they just need a little help finding what those things are.

If you hire people based on first impressions only you may miss out on having dedicated people on your team. Sometimes seek for knowledge about that person, converse with them without bais, respect people so it is easy for them to be free & comfortable around you.

4. MONKEY D. LUFFY GENUINELY CARES DEEPLY FOR PEOPLE

The genuineness of Luffy’s care is something that instantly endears you to him. Luffy has no time to pretend to care for anyone, he just does. That kind of realness is becoming quite rare these days. He has no issue with giving his everything to protect people, protecting his team like his life depended on it & loving people without reason. A true leader is affectionate to his people. He knows their needs, find ways to work with them to provide those needs and sometimes step-up/in to help them get through tough times. That is who Luffy is. He isn’t without faults of his own but you can always feel the kindness in his heart.

5. HE HAS NO ISSUES WITH STARTING SMALL AND GROWING

As ambitious as Luffy is, he still has a trained understanding of his current situations. He always finds a way to learn from every encounter whether with an enemy or a friend. He understands the importance of starting from somewhere instead of waiting for perfection to begin. Luffy also has no unrealistic expectations for anyone. He believes in giving people chances to grow. That’s a leader right there y’all.

6. HE CREATES ACCESSIBILITY TO HIS TEAM WITHOUT BIAS

There is no cutting through the corners with Luffy. He loves equality and kindness. He also built a culture among his team where everyone is accessible to him, have the same privileges and does not have a so-called authority over another, that way he unconsciously made his team members value him with their life. He has no bias for anyone, a very open book that people close to him could always predict his next moves. The honest truth is Luffy has a mantra that directs how he works with everyone. He is the most accessible, open and friendly character in One Piece.
